History

Wimauma was named by Captain Davis (who created the community) by taking the first letters of the names of his three daughters: Willie, Maude, and Mary. Beautiful recreation and agricultural lands surround the Wimauma community. The area is home to several nature preserves, the tranquil Manatee River, and an airport.

Since 1967, the Wimauma Community Development Corporation has been a stable force to unite the community and assist with building the capacity of residents to engage in meaningful change. Here are some highlights of our long history.

1967

Founded as the Citizens Improvement League of Wimauma, we have a rich 50+ year history of creating a brighter future for Wimauma.

1980

Qualified as a recognized business with the State of Florida and started providing annual reports of its work.

2008

Incorporated as a nonprofit charity with its official IRS designation. Giving The Citizens Improvement League of Wimauma Florida its formal resignation as an organization and certifying its long history since 1967.

2011

The WCDC deeded land to the First Prospect Baptist Church for the Wimauma Community Cemetery.

2013

The WCDC purchased land in the Wimauma Downtown area for the development of a future community good project.

2014

The Common Good Initiative was launched in 2014 by Allegany Franciscan Ministries.  The Wimauma CDC was the anchor organization supporting the Common Good Initiative to create opportunities and develop strategies that lead to positive health outcomes for people in Wimauma.

2016

The Citizens Improvement League of Wimauma, Florida officially changed its name to the Wimauma Community Development Corporation (WCDC). This solidified the vision of a bold forward-moving future for Wimauma.

2019

The Wimauma CDC continued growing its Wimauma partnerships with a 5-year growth in revenue.

2020

Year one of the COVID Global Pandemic challenged the need for additional support for Wimauma Residents and the WCDC partners.

2021

Year two of the COVID Global Pandemic. The community challenges increase calling for new ideas for Wimauma Residents and the WCDC partners.

2022

Year three of the COVID Global Pandemic. Work and household needs have changed for all Wimauma residents. The WCDC and its partners face new challenges in supporting rural residents.

2023

The WCDC launches into a rebuilding phase. Identifying a new strategic direction and opportunities.
