Downtown Plan for Wimauma One Step Closer – Community leaders and residents to meet March 6 to discuss next phase

A revitalized downtown for Wimauma is closer to reality. Beginning last summer, Hillsborough County’s Community & Infrastructure Planning team has worked with urban planners from the University of South Florida (USF) and Urban3 Consulting, as well as the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Wimauma community leaders, and residents to develop feasible priorities for downtown.

Residents are invited to attend the next Wimauma community meeting on March 6 to learn what County planners, USF, and Urban3 Consulting have in mind. Community & Infrastructure Planning’s goal is that by the end of the meeting, the community will see a clear path forward to build community wealth and prosperity through partnership, organizing, and supporting one another in revitalizing Wimauma, and that there is a clear action plan.

Although an in-depth analysis of Wimauma began last summer, conversations about the community didn’t just start.

In 2007, a Wimauma Community Plan was developed, embracing the priorities of safety, traditional smalltown character, clustered housing, preservation of native habitats, recreational opportunities, and developing commercial opportunities. In 2020, a series of community meetings was held to update the plan. And in May 2022, a community meeting was held in Wimauma so residents, planners, and community leaders could come together to ask questions and discuss priorities.

Partnership is vital to this effort. FDOT is committed to make immediate, needed safety improvements and to look at long-range improvements that will transform Wimauma.
